Liz Truss and Giorgia Meloni, two new prime ministers (one in waiting) confronting bond market squalls, should heed words of guidance from Jacques de Larosière, sage of European central bankers. In a new book on the perils of financialisation, the former Banque de France governor and International Monetary Fund managing director blames years of ‘systematically accommodating’ monetary policy for ‘a hyper-leveraged financial system vulnerable to crises.’

To call it unprecedented would still not do justice to the chaotic market environment in which the UK Debt Management Office issued a syndicated gilt on 28 September. ‘We had to press on,’ said Robert Stheeman, chief executive of the UK DMO.
