HELMEPA launches its “Month of Positive Action for the Marine Environment”
HELMEPA’s “Month of Positive Action for the Marine Environment” begins tomorrow Saturday, 21st September with a beach clean-up along the shores of the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Neo Faliro. The clean-up has been organized by HELMEPA in collaboration with the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (HE.R.R.Co.) and will feature the participation of students of the Geitona Private School and IonioCollege.
At 10am, HELMEPA staff will draw the volunteers together to give them a short introduction to the “Month of Positive Action for the Marine Environment” and provide some information on the surrounds. They will then hand out the necessary supplies to volunteers such as plastic gloves, garbage bags and litter recording data sheets.
Within the framework of the European research program, PERSEUS, and in collaboration with scientists from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, a special European Environment Service’s application, “Marine Litter Watch”, will be pilot-tested and used for the first time in Greece at the clean-up on Saturday.This will allow users to record litter items collected on their mobile phones.
A series of beach and underwater clean-ups and various other environmental activities are scheduled to take place up until and including 21st October as part of this special “Month” in the following places: Agioi Theodoroi, Aigio, Anavyssos, Cephallonia, Chalkoutsi Oropou, Kavala, the island of Kalymnos, Keratea, Kymi, the island of Leros, Loutraki, Menemeni, Neo Faliro, Piraeus, the island of Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Thiva and Vrachneika Achaias.
