Athens, Greece, May 2026. As part of the ongoing cooperation between Nereus and Z-Joule, Fernando Alvarez, PhD, has been appointed Vice President of Sales Northern Europe at Nereus Digital Bunkers, the maritime bunker procurement and intelligence platform. In this role, Fernando will lead the company’s strategy across the Scandinavian, North Sea, and Baltic markets, bringing eighteen years of applied expertise in maritime fuel and emissions compliance optimisation to one of the most regulated shipping regions in the world.
Northern Europe is the market where the future of maritime fuel management is being defined today. Operators across the region have moved beyond treating fuel purely as a procurement decision and are managing it also as a compliance question. FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS, UK ETS, and IMO CII are live constraints in Northern Europe, shaping vessel employment, charterer requirements, and fleet investment decisions. The result is a market with higher data demands, greater analytical sophistication, and a more urgent need for procurement intelligence than anywhere else in the shipping world.
Nereus has been built precisely for this environment. The platform gives operators market intelligence, voyage optimisation, and procurement execution in a single system before any purchasing decision is made. The Northern European market is now asking for exactly that capability. This appointment brings the platform to the operators who need it most, represented by someone who has spent his career creating innovative digital tools for this market.
Fernando carries credentials that are directly relevant to the demands of this market. He holds a doctorate in the optimisation of maritime transport and built the techno-economic analysis capabilities that led the creation of SEA\LNG. He went on to co-found BunkerMetric, where he served as CTO. Through Z-Joule, he has built innovative tools for fleet-wide emissions optimisation and compliance planning across FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS, and CII, the regulatory stack now defining commercial outcomes in Northern Europe. This positions him at the intersection of procurement intelligence and emissions management, the precise direction Nereus is developing its platform toward.
In his new role, Fernando will represent Nereus strategically across Northern Europe. He will build relationships with fleet owners, ship managers, and bunker buyers, and serve as the primary contact for any operator in the region seeking to apply the platform to their procurement and fuel management operations.
“Fernando has spent eighteen years solving the problem that Nereus was built to address and doing it from inside the most demanding market in the world. His technical depth, his network in Northern Europe, and his understanding of where fuel management is heading made this appointment clear. We are entering a market that sets a high standard. Fernando has already met it.”
Nikolas Gkikas, Founder and CEO, Nereus Digital Bunkers
The appointment also reflects the trajectory of Nereus’s platform development. The company is investing in capabilities that connect commercial procurement decisions to their operational and regulatory consequences. Northern Europe, where operators are already managing these dimensions together, is the natural environment to advance that work. The collaboration between Nereus and Z-Joule creates a production-grade platform for exploring integrated approaches to fuel procurement and emissions compliance.
“Bunker procurement optimisation has traditionally focused on individual vessels and the weeks immediately ahead. That paradigm clashes with a regulatory framework that assesses compliance annually and, in the case of FuelEU, permits fleet-wide pooling. Treating compliance as a year-end problem creates substantial financial liabilities. Nereus and Z-Joule provide the intelligence layer for proactive, joint optimisation of fuel procurement and emissions compliance.”
