Vessel hijacked in Arabian Sea – Maritime Security Alert: 20 February 2012
A maritime security alert has been issued for the Arabian Sea after a merchant vessel was reported hijacked at 1510 local time on 15 February; the attack was confirmed on 17 February. The attack occured 25NM SE of Sadh, Oman. The vessel’s last reported position was 17.14N 056.30E on 18 February. Further details were unavailable at the time of writing. Oman’s southern coast line has been the site of increased pirate activity in recent weeks; operators are advised to proceed with extreme caution when transiting along the coastline. Pirate activity is expected to increase in the coming weeks as weather conditions improve.
