Sailors’ Society supporters take on London’s Broadgate Tower to raise funds towards maritime welfare

Over 50 supporters of maritime charity Sailors’ Society came together at the weekend to take on London’s mighty Broadgate Tower in an adrenaline fuelled challenge.

The abseilers dared to drop the 540ft of one of London’s highest skyscrapers raising over £32, 000 for Sailors’ Society. Clear blue skies and calm winds made for stunning views across the city, including landmarks such as the Gherkin, the Shard and the beating heart of London town – the thriving River Thames.

Amongst the 59 adventurous supporters were Nigel James of LOC, George Papadakis of A P & A, Spinnaker Recruitment, and the Jeanius Consulting crew, as well as the Sailors’ Society’s Chairman, Alastair Fischbacher; Sailors’ Society Trustee, Jon Holloway; and the charity’s Tilbury and London Gateway Port Chaplain, Frans Sahetapy.

Alastair Fischbacher said, “It was fantastic to join together with other Sailors’ Society supporters for a truly unforgettable experience. Our merchant seafarers are the lifeblood of our industry and it’s good to be able to raise awareness of their welfare needs. The view from the top was great – as long as you didn’t look down!”

The event was sponsored by Reed Smith and t-shirts for the charity abseilers were sponsored by Clyde Marine Training. Funds raised will go towards Sailors’ Society’s work transforming the lives of seafarers and their families in need; at home, in port and at sea.

Sailors’ Society is an international charity that provides a personal lifeline for the world’s 1.5 million seafarers and their families, at home in port, and at sea. The charity offers practical help, emotional and spiritual support, financial assistance and family liaison. Our port chaplains visit thousands of ships every year, directly addressing the needs of seafarers – irrespective of a person’s belief or nationality – as well as maintaining vital links within the Ports that they operate
