The Marine Technical Committee meeting of Bureau Veritas for the first half of 2015 took place on June 10th at the prestigious Yacht Club of Greece. The well-attended meeting started as always with social time, where attendees had the chance to exchange their views and latest news from the shipping world.
The meeting began with the introduction of the new members. They were introduced by the committee’s chairman George Sarris, president of Enterprises Shipping & Trading SA. Anastasios Angelopoulos, marine chief executive for Greece and Cyprus, secretary of the committee, then welcomed the committee members.
The technical presentations were begun by Francois Togny, head of the Test & Measurements section at BV head office in Paris. The title of his presentation was Marine Measurements, Overlooked but Better than Calculations. Mr Togny went through various examples of how BV can assist in addressing questions such as the source of worrisome vibrations, and compliance with the soon-to-become mandatory noise directive.
Following this, Dr John Kokarakis, vice-president for technology and business development for the Hellenic, Black Sea region and Middle East, presented Challenges in LNG Fuelled Ships – the BV Contribution. He focused on an explanation of the BV notation Gas Prepared which defines the path to prepare a vessel to accept LNG as fuel avoiding unfortunate surprises and the need for major changes.
Dr Erwan Jacquin, chief executive of Hydrocean, took as his subject the use of computation fluid dynamics, CFD, to optimise and design efficient ships. His presentation included numerous examples of bow redesign, calculation of optimum trim for fast vessels and hydrodynamic optimisation over the operating range of the ship.
The meeting concluded with the traditional dinner, during which there were ample opportunities for everybody to fraternise and enjoy the delicious food offered by the restaurant of the Yacht Club of Greece.
