The Korean Register (KR) – an IACS member classification society – has radically overhauled its ground-breaking software package, SeaTrust-HullScan, the ship design support solution that analyzes and appraises a vessel’s hull structure. This will deliver efficiencies when applying the incoming Harmonized Common Structural Rules (CSR-H).
Speeding up the process
As CSR-H includes a significant expansion in the scope of the direct strength analysis, more time and resource are required. The new SeaTrust–HullScan incorporates additional functionality to support modeling through interfaces with the specialized 3D CAD systems (AVEVA Marine, Smart Marine 3D and others) which are widely used in most shipyards in Korea. This radically reduces the time spent applying the requirements of CSR-H. Additionally, the automatic generation of a fine mesh model on location also saves many man-hours.
Enhancing design quality
The new SeaTrust-HullScan delivers functions to optimize design and review data so that calculation results can be analyzed with a single click. Correct analysis and evaluation of results is delivered through automatic generation of buckling panels based on Finite Element Methodology (FEM).
SeaTrust-HullScan was initially launched by KR in 2013 and it has been adopted by almost all shipbuilders and ship designers in Korea. Commenting on the new version, Dr Kim Chang-wook, Executive Vice President of KR’s Technical Division said:

KR played a leading role in the IACS technical team that developed the two independent rule sets – Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Common Structural Rules for Oil Tankers. The harmonized rule set will become effective from 1 July 2015, one year earlier than IMO’s mandatory application date.
