Marine apprentices and students exploring the Land Rover BAR stand at the London Boat Show 2016
Yesterday (12 January 2016) marked the inaugural Apprenticeship Tuesday at the London Boat Show, showcasing the diversity and growth of the marine industry as a career pathway for future generations.
Throughout the day, the Show welcomed marine apprentices and students from all areas of the industry. In roles varying from marine engineers to riggers and carpenters, Apprenticeship Tuesday recognised the wealth of accessible skills and careers in the sector.
The apprentices were given a tour of the Show and visited some of the leading British brands which are supporting the development of future talent within the marine workforce, including Garmin, Sunseeker International, Raymarine and Land Rover BAR.
British Marine has been working with its members to support marine apprentices for a number of years to ensure that the industry, bringing £2.97 billion worth of turnover to the UK economy, continues to thrive. Most recently, it has been working with the Government and an industry working group, to develop a Trailblazer apprenticeship scheme in boatbuilding. Research from British Marine estimates that over 200 apprenticeships start each year employed across more than 73 marine companies within. This number is set to rise with more and more companies signing up to schemes including the Shipwrights’ Apprenticeship Scheme.
Amanda Simpson, Training Manager at British Marine, explains: “Our objective is to inspire and inform both our member companies and future generations. In turn making businesses aware of the benefits of taking on and developing apprentices within their core workforce and engaging students with exciting and interesting careers in the industry.”
