In the most general sense, everyone will be familiar with the concept of fatigue, particularly in relation to the human kind. Just as life can wear each of us down, so machines and structures will become worn down through normal and abnormal usage. The key issue for every type of fatigue, however, is that some elements can and do go undetected. Where this happens, the consequences can literally be fatal. This edition looks at such issues and raises points of good practice. Be alert – your own and others’ safety depends on it.

Examining quay cranes criticallyIt is estimated that 150 quayside container cranes develop a fatigue crack annually, with the potential for a catastrophic failure of a critical structural member.This is revealed in the Port Equipment Manufacturers Association (PEMA) in their latest publication, entitled ‘Practical Structural Examination of Container Handling Cranes in Ports and Terminals’.
