Continued Capers volatility with Geopolitical Economic uncertainty

John Faraclas

The BDI (Baltic Dry Index) ended the day with 35 points plus standing at 1,147, thanks to the excellent but also volatile “performance” of the Capesize tonnage. The Geopolitical situation, as expected and as things prove becomes more and more uncertain. John Faraclas’ midweek report:

The BDI cannot be taken as a guide to the Markets for its improvement nor development, particularly on the valuation front, as one size CANNOT determine and make up the Market, a healthier market as many will tell you!

The Capers’ BCI 2014 gained 207 points and now reads 2,136 – over and above the 2,000 point mark, but what about the other sizes and their proportional “contribution” to the Market?

The Panamaxes’ BPI lost another 35 points today and now stands at 1,150 – a continues fall, eh!

The Supras’ BSI remained the same at 877 points, and

The Handies’ BHSI gained just three points – now reading 505…

CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION should be exercised at all times. It is the preamble for the Market and conversely Shipping for the very very very few! Just look around to see who’s buying, ordering and who goes busted…

The Wets with mixed feelings yet again; the last published BDTI (Dirties) and BCTI (Cleans) stood at 847 – minus three and 660 plus 14 points respectively.

The price of WTI gained one more dollar and now stands at US$ 48,84 – pleased to see same below the US$ 50 mark!!!!!

All other sectors remain the same as per our previous reporting; nothing has changed, but wait to see for whom the bells tool…

The Geopolitical aspects are getting worse in all fronts with the MIGRANTS as always on top of all developments; just read carefully the letter from Lesvos today and see what you make out of it. Turkey continues to threaten us all with continuous blackmail on the issue following the clash of its governing party members and other sympathisers with almost all European Union members. The time has come for those in authority within the European Union to completely cut-off Turkey from every European connection whatsoever; pity for the Turkish people, but can they change their leaders (in plural)?

The Wars in Syria and Iraq with ISIS and other functions continues; it is also time for the Western Alliance to saw its teeth to all there. We all had enough and a prolonged situation will make it worse for all!!! Russia must get the message too; we do not live in the 1917 – 1923 period Mr. Putin; Turks will remain Turks for you too, given their behaviour. Do not forget that all Russian and Soviet leaders have condemned Turkey and its Wars, the famous Russian-Turkish Wars which brought you back in development and Peace for centuries…  Turkey’s cyber war too must be fully punished and we must all be on alert. Wonder why the Secretary-general of UN and of NATO do not issue an ultimatum against Turkey for its behaviour in 0ur 2017 society!!! The War of Words of all of Turkey’s politicians must be curbed!  E N O U G H !!!!

Next door in Greece, the situation remains the same. Envy and still corruption, including political corruption rules the country. We have strongly expressed our views of what Greece needs and that’s only an ARISTOS team to run and streamline the country. The lenders too must end their despicable attitude against the Greek people; they knew all along the situation and they didn’t move on time for reasons that when one day surface, they will not be able to hide. There are more skeletons in their cupboards than one can imagine. A dramatic tragedy… Did I hear you say GREXIT? Now, having said and written this last sentence, all it means is a tough nego with the “creditors” and their accomplices in this “Lending to Greece” crime!

On the Greek shipping front now: as expected and announced last night – the intuition was there, the Greek owners for the first time didn’t prefer the Blue and White banner as their first choice in flagging their ships…

BREXIT continues, all fine; there will be some hiccups, but we do not worry… the ball is in the European Union’s court. Theresa May expects the Royal Assent around 11:00 GMT tomorrow to enable her proceed at her ease in triggering Article 50… I guess Mr. Tusk cannot understand the reasons for the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. Pity though Mrs. May will not attend the 60th Anniversary on the 25th of March…

In the Netherlands  PM Mark Rutte did it; his party come first! A great win for Democracy. Good to see the Greens gaining ground. Time now to form a viable government and, repeat AND, respond to Turkish behaviour!

Strange things …happening in Germany; a parcel send from Greece with explosive arrived in the German Ministry of Finance for Wolfgang Schaeuble – the “sender” being Greece’s centre-right ND party deputy Adonis Georgiades… Hope the authorities pin down whoever did this and who ever is involved and let’s see an open public punishment! Adonis Georgiades’ bookstore in central Athens was attacked by terrorists, thank the 12 Greek Gods without human loss; only damages… Enough!

In Ukraine there is a blockade by war veterans and activists for goods destined towards its eastern part where the troubles are still on with the Russian separatists. CAUTION as Putin doesn’t like troubles in his own court. Indeed a solution is a must, but who has the diplomatic guts to do it, eh??

In Italy, another country possibility for an exit, the famous ITEXIT, police manage to arrest 69 people in Naples region including political figures and businessmen; Casaleri, Zagaria – back by Camorra are said to be involved…

In France the presidential election period gets hots in all fronts; we shall see what’s up as the economy isn’t that rosy… and that’s a fact and a major issue…

In Germany too, there is a lot of scepticism as uncertainty will certainly become the name of the …menu there too. Add the USA-German relations messy beginning and see how Mrs. Merkel et al will tackle all new issues; UK on a BREXIT modus, adds a lot which might not be bearable for the German locomotive…

At the other side of the Atlantic …err in Pacific though were Hawaii belongs, a federal judge objects to president Trump’s new travel ban… Janet Yellen raised the interest rate by 0,25 centum, the third rise in a decade… we shall see what’s next there; caution!

Russian spies are indicted due to Yahoo breach, a theft of 500 million accounts back in 2014… Monitoring at its best, but… Meantime, the president maintains that former president Obama wiretapped him…  Again, we shall the end of this saga…

In South America now and in Venezuela the bread war hits up. Nicolas Maduro continues to rock the boat…  In Brazil reforms in the pensions bring people to the streets all over… caution there too…

In Africa, messy events between South Sudan and Ethiopia leave 28 dead… Somali pirates demand ransom for the tanker and its crew they hold… I guess that a very special punishment must take place and smash any single pirate there and from any place on Planet Ocean. The IMO Secretary-General warning must also be followed by actions!

In the Far East, were US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is visiting, China feels unease and let’s see how the US and China find the solution, not just a solution to the North Korean nuclear saga. For sure China has the unique ability to halt North Koreans in pursuing their goals…. Japan and South Korea will retaliate in case something happens there; that’s for sure!

That’s all for now and we remind you to be on guard for every eventuality; things might get all of a sudden out of control, and this will affect the shipping lanes and Planet Ocean’s dire straits…
