Shipping union RMT today welcomed what it described as a long overdue but important breakthrough in qualifications to train the next generation of maritime‎ catering staff.

The union response follows an announcement by the Maritime Trailblazer Working Group,  which was set up to agree qualifications in the maritime sector, that a new maritime caterer apprenticeship is now in place for employers, colleges and future staff to access.
Steve Todd, RMT National Secretary‎, said;
“We welcome this but, quite frankly, four years after work started on the Maritime Caterer Apprenticeship, it’s about time the Government agreed to the proposed new qualification from the employer led Maritime Trailblazer Working Group.
“We have seen good progress in employers taking up the Deck Rating Apprenticeship and we must see an immediate uptake of the Maritime Caterer by employers, training providers and the thousands of young people across the country looking for a meaningful, long term career at sea.”
RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;‎
‎
“This is another source of public support for training UK Ratings and RMT strongly encourage the Shipping industry to use this qualification to train, each year the hundreds of Catering Ratings the industry and the country needs to reverse job losses, demographic decline and skills depletion.”
“We will continue to work with the other members on the Maritime Trailblazer to bring forward Apprenticeships for the next generation of Ratings to train to work across the engine, electro-technical and on-board services departments of Merchant vessels, at a rate of pay above the apprentice minimum wage.‎”
