The 10th non-hybrid meeting of Chapter Earth, the European Travel Commission’s (ETC) climate action working group, took place in Athlone, Ireland, bringing together national tourism representatives to accelerate climate action in the European travel sector. The ETC continues to lead collaborative efforts to position Europe as the most sustainable tourism destination in the world.
Hosted with the generous support of Fáilte Ireland, this landmark meeting marked Chapter Earth’s first dedicated best-practice sharing session, providing a platform for meaningful exchange among member countries. Attendees from Greece, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Iceland, Finland, Portugal, Belgium/Flanders, had the opportunity to explore Ireland’s Climate Action Programme firsthand, a national initiative that demonstrates the economic and environmental benefits of sustainability. The programme currently engages over 150 tourism businesses through expert mentoring and practical guidance on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and water management.
“Integrating climate initiatives into national tourism strategies is no longer optional, it is essential. Our discussions highlighted how European destinations are transforming climate ambition into tangible actions, offering valuable inspiration for Greece. The example of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, with its peatland restoration, resonates strongly with regions like Western Macedonia and Kastoria, where sustainable tourism can preserve cultural heritage while creating new economic and environmental opportunities.” – Eleni Skarveli, Director, GNTO UK & Ireland.
The 10th Chapter Earth meeting reaffirmed the importance of pan-European collaboration, local innovation, and storytelling in shaping a climate-resilient future for tourism, one that empowers communities, protects natural resources, and creates authentic, sustainable experiences for visitors across Europe.
