NEMO’s Security by Design Workshop, held on 2–3 October at Lloyd’s Register in London, brought together the IAEA, IMO, national regulators and industry — including the CORE POWER team — to align maritime and nuclear security frameworks.
The event focused on sharing and integrating security requirements from both sectors and marked the first modern public dialogue between the IAEA and IMO on civil nuclear maritime security, a significant step toward developing coherent international standards.
Participants explored practical security scenarios for future nuclear-powered vessels, highlighting both commonalities and unique considerations compared to conventional shipping. The workshop set the stage for a sustained international effort to build the regulatory foundations needed for the safe, secure and scalable deployment of advanced nuclear technologies at sea.
