Comment from the IMarEST following conclusion of IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee Extraordinary Session 2
Alasdair Wishart, technical and policy director at the Institute of Marine, Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMarEST) said:
“It’s a setback that the IMO’s Net Zero Framework (NZF) has been delayed by a year. There is a real need for the global shipping sector to have a cohesive approach to prevent differing reporting requirements – this is significant opportunity to enable an orderly energy transition in our industry.
“I still believe we can open the door to the first globally applied carbon pricing mechanism and set a precedent for international climate governance. The IMarEST’s expert IMO delegation will now be reviewing ways to salvage plans to reach the industry’s 2050 greenhouse gas targets.”
