What do you predict will be a headline story or theme for green/alternative fuels in 2021?
“In 2021, we will see a number of energy transition strategy announcements from major companies. Hopefully we will see not only infrastructure and construction projects committing to the use of alternative and transition fuels to usher in that change, but other sectors, such as supermarkets announcing their plans for reducing their emissions. We have to remember that there is not one silver bullet for the scale of the environmental problem we face, we can’t get rid of all our existing assets – trucks will still be in use in 2021, for example, but a mixed energy solution which avoids an increase in our carbon footprint will be a necessity.
“The conversation should also start moving away from how consumers directly use fuels, to the use of fuels in the supply chains that are still vital to our lives, such as in data centres and home deliveries. We need to ensure that our reliance on technology and our convenience economy does not become our next big dirty secret.”
What do you think will be the greatest obstacle green/alternative fuels face in 2021?
“As we try and avoid a recession, it is essential that people understand that clean fuel and energy does not have to be the more expensive option. Protecting our planet doesn’t have to come at a cost to our economy or our bottom lines, there is a balance that can be reached, but it is a huge challenge to get people to understand that.”
Looking at current trends, who/what sector do you think will be the champions of sustainability in 2021, and why?
“Due to a number of government initiatives coming into play, the construction industry is set to grow steadily in 2021. Not only does British construction need to adapt and amend itself for the environmental challenges we face, it has the potential to become a world-leading champion of sustainability if only a few small changes, as simple and easy as switching from diesel to a drop-in biofuel fuel, are made.”
Where do you see GBF in twelve months’ time?
“In the next 12 months we hope to stay honest about the true state of carbon reductions, and their overall impact on the environment. By the end of 2021, we expect to have saved in the year 170,000 tonnes of C02e. And our commitment to delivering excellence in carbon reduction, from tail pipe and energy mix will be as strong as ever.”
What change would you like to see in 2021?
“In 2021, we need to see everyone in a position of power taking more responsibility for their emissions. The Paris climate agreement and UN talks are bringing the climate conversation to world leaders. However, Alok Sharma stated that despite large ambitions, it’s not enough. The word “power” doesn’t just mean governments and politicians, it also includes procurement managers and managing directors – anyone responsible for the fuel going into an engine needs to pay attention and take action. We have said it before but now more than ever people need to take action now not put off to tomorrow. The use of alternative fuels is so simple and so effective in improving air quality and reducing green house gases that they must be adopted as one of the transition technologies today.”
