The ‘lifeblood’ of ships is changing. It may not be apparent yet, but the transition is already underway and within the next fifteen years more than half of the oceangoing fleet will likely be operating on fuels other than oil. This drastic change stems, predominantly, from global warming.

This week, LCDR Jarrod DeWitz, U.S. Coast Guard at the World Maritime University (WMU) examines the future of clean fuels and how the WMU is preparing the industry for this new future following the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Two Billion Tonnes Of Goods Shipped With GHG Rating

To date, the 35 charterers that use the Rightship Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rating to factor the most efficient ships into their supply chain selection have collectively undertaken over 26, 000 vessel movements, shipping more than two billion dead weight tonnes actually.

The use of the GHG Emissions Rating was first used by Cargill, Huntsman and UNIPEC UK.

Sniffing The Sulphur

Ship emission violators are being tackled in Europe thanks to sniffer drones.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the European Space Agency are hoping to cooperate in tracking the pollution from ships sailing in some of Europe’s busiest waters: the English Channel, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia, between Sweden and Finland.

OceanSaver BWTS Completes USCG Land-Based Testing

OceanSaver’s Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) has passed the land-based test programme for the US Coast Guard’s BWTS Type-Approval Regime.

The Mark II BWTS from OceanSaver passed five consecutive tests, carried out at Daewoo Heavy Industries (DHI) facility in Denmark, each for brackish water marine water and fresh water.
