DATE: December 21, 2012 COUNTRY: Germany PORT: Kiel Canal Repair works interrupted – Brunsbuttel lock back in operation
Kiel Canal Authorities have announced that repair works on the new south lock at Brunsbuttel have been interrupted and the lock is back in operation with an effetive length of 200 metres. Consequently, both locks plus the small old locks at Brunsbuttel are now working. The repair works will probably be resumed in Week 2 of the new year.

Repair and restoration works will be carried out on the existing rock bund at Kusu Island from 24 December 2012 to 31 March 2013. According to the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore’s Port Marine Notice No.185 of 2012 dated 21 December 2012, the works will be conducted 24 hours daily – including Sundays & Public Holidays – within the working areas bounded by the following coordinates (WGS 84 Datum): 1) 01 deg. 13.534’N / 103 deg. 51.520’E 2) 01 deg. 13.589’N / 103 deg. 51.557’E 3) 01 deg. 13.540’N / 103 deg. 51.672’E 4) 01 deg. 13.457’N / 103 deg. 51.759’E 5) 01 deg. 13.321’N / 103 deg. 51.802’E 6) 01 deg. 13.240’N / 103 deg. 51.751’E 7) 01 deg. 13.251’N / 103 deg. 51.726’E The repair and restoration works will entail sorting, leveling and pitching of existing rock bund. The works will be carried out by excavators from the landward side and the materials for the restoration works will be provided by the work barges. A safety boat will be deployed in the vicinity of the working area to warn other craft to keep clear of the operations. Craft involved in the works will exhibit the appropriate local and international day and night signals. When in the vicinity of the working areas, mariners are reminded to: a) keep well clear and not to enter the working areas ; b) maintain a proper lookout; c) proceed at a safe speed and navigate with caution; d) maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 12 (East Control); and e) communicate with East Control on VHF Channel 12 for assistance, if required.

With immediate effect and for approximately 15 weeks, marine site investigation works involving drilling of boreholes will be carried out [off the Hong Kong International Airport] in the area bounded by straight lines joining the following co-ordinates (WGS 84 Datum) from (A) to (I) and the adjacent shoreline: (A) 22 deg. 17.778’N / 113 deg. 53.645’E (B) 22 deg. 17.693’N / 113 deg. 53.358’E (C) 22 deg. 18.917’N / 113 deg. 52.295’E (D) 22 deg. 19.694’N / 113 deg. 52.293’E (E) 22 deg. 20.661’N / 113 deg. 55.022’E (F) 22 deg. 20.300’N / 113 deg. 55.713’E (G) 22 deg. 19.957’N / 113 deg. 55.739’E (H) 22 deg. 20.215’N / 113 deg. 56.948’E (I) 22 deg. 19.397’N / 113 deg. 56.742’E The works will be carried out by two flat top barges and four jack-up platforms. Some tugs and work boats will provide assistance. The number of vessels engaged in the works will change from time to time to suit operational requirements. A working area of approximately 50 meters will be established around each flat top barge. Yellow marker buoys fitted with yellow flashing lights will be laid to mark the positions of the anchors extending from the barge. A working area of approximately 25 meters will be established around each jack-up platform. Yellow flashing lights will be installed at the four corners of each platform to indicate the position of the platform. Vessels engaged in the operations will display signals as prescribed in international and local regulations. The hours of works will be round-the-clock. Vessels navigating in the vicinity should proceed with caution.

Beach improvement works will be carried out at Palawan Beach, Sentosa, from 3 to 31 January 2013. According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s Port Marine Notice No.182 of 2012, the works will be conducted 24 hours daily – including Sundays and Public Holidays – within a working area bounded by the following co-ordinates (WGS 84 Datum): 1) 1 deg. 14.858’N / 103 deg. 49.426’E 2) 1 deg. 14.832’N / 103 deg. 49.376’E 3) 1 deg. 14.792’N / 103 deg. 49.401’E 4) 1 deg. 14.783’N / 103 deg. 49.401’E 5) 1 deg. 14.779’N / 103 deg. 49.403’E 6) 1 deg. 14.783’N / 103 deg. 49.413’E The beach improvement works entail the construction of a temporary ramp and the sand will be transported from the barges to the Palawan Beach, Sentosa by trucks via road access. A safety boat will be in attendance throughout the duration of the operation. Craft involved in the works will exhibit the appropriate local and international day and night signals. When in the vicinity of the working area, mariners are reminded to: (a) keep well clear and not to enter the working area; (b) maintain a proper lookout; (c) proceed at a safe speed & navigate with caution; (d) maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 68 (Western Control); and (e) communicate with Western Control on Channel 68 for assistance, if required.
