Last Thursday, the 17th of May, HRH Princess Anne visited the “Aekatherini Laskaridis Foundation” in Piraeus.
The Princess Royal was welcomed by the President of the Foundation Panos Laskaridis, Vice-president Marilena Laskaridis, the President of the Nautical Museum of Greece Anastasia Anagnostopoulos-Paloumpi and all the staff of the Foundation.
HRH Princess Anne was accompanied by the British Ambassador to Greece Dr. David Landsman OBE, Captain Nick Wright, Special Secretary and Lisa Whanstall, Counselor at the British Embassy in Athens.
The Collection of Admiral Lord Nelson*, which she toured, includes handwritten letters, personal effects, newspapers of the period mentioning his victories, remarkable paintings and seascapes depicting Lord Nelson himself.
The Princess was particularly interested in the rare collection of artefacts, representative samples of an important period of British history, and expressed her thanks. Rumours have it that her visit at the ALF was the best part of her visit prior to the ceremonies at the Panathenaikon Stadion, part of the beginning of the Olympic Torch’s travel to Britain, where she was handed over the Torch for its long trip to Lands End in Cornwall, for the start of the 70-day relay around the UK. The London Olympic Games begin on the 27th of July.
