Updates to tunnel installation works – fifth stage
It was reported yesterday that the fifth and final stage of works to install a tunnel under the Coatzacolacos River will be conducted from 00:01 hours on 3 May until 24:00 hours on 6 May.
However, due to forecast of bad weather, the fifth stage will be carried out from 00:01 hours on 4 May until 24:00 hours on 7 May instead.
According to the authorities, the work will interfere with the navigation of vessels entering and/or sailing to either Pajaritos terminals (Agronitrogenados, Innophos and Pemex) and to the Commercial Port terminals
located on the left bank of the river (Celanese, Cemex, Vopak, BrederoShaw, Pemex Gas, Multiver, Transferencias Graneleras del Istmo, Terminal Marítima de Altamira (PMI – Pet coke), Edf Man, etc.).
The works are part of a project to install a tunnel connecting the urban area of the City of Coatzacoalcos on the left bank to the Allende suburb on the right bank. The tunnel is designed for cars, buses and, to certain
degree, trucks in a bid to solve the traffic jams on Coatzacoalcos Bridge, about 1.5 miles from the river mouth. The tunnel will cross the river about 1.1 miles of the river mouth and will be located in the entrance of
Pajaritos Channel and the Commercial Port on the left bank of the river.
During the working period, the following restrictions will be in force:
1) No traffic will be allowed during the four days, at both Pajaritos Terminal & Commercial Port Terminals.
2) When the port reopens, it will be for 24 hours during the first day only.
3) For the following 8 days, port traffic will be restricted to daylight only (no night traffic allowed).
4) Vessels’ speed will be restricted to 6 knots while passing through the area.
