Considering the potential harm of plastics for cetacean (especially odontocetes) a simultaneous systematic monitoring of floating plastics and cetaceans, using ferries as platform of observations, started in Italy in 2013.
Winter results in the transborder region of Bonifacio Strait, between Italy and France, showed, after more than 1100 km of observation effort, approx. 1 objected larger than 25 cm each squared km. Values are 50% lower when compared to the other experimental assessment area such as the Tuscany Arcipelago and the Latium coastline
