GAC Dubai Managing Director Ronald Lichtenecker accepts the 2017 Chairman’s Award for HSSE Excellence from its founder, GAC Group Executive Chairman Björn Engblom.

Prize money for safety and environmental initiative will support efforts to beat hunger

Dubai, UAE, 17 May 2018 – The GAC Group’s long term commitment to social responsibility has been demonstrated once again with the presentation of the third Chairman’s Award for HSSE Excellence. Not only does the winning entry reflect real measures taken to protect the environment and the welfare of workers, the USD 10,000 prize money will support efforts to fight world hunger.

The 2017 prize was presented by Group Executive Chairman and founder of the award Björn Engblom to Ronald Lichtenecker, Managing Director of GAC Dubai, in recognition of the programme to regenerate and prolong the life of the batteries that keep the company’s forklifts, trucks and other material handling equipment running.

During the monitoring period, the battery regeneration machine at GAC Dubai’s Distribution Centre facility workshop made it possible to avoid a total of 15,769 charging cycles. That means reduced risk of injuries, longer battery life and a reduction of the company’s carbon footprint.

Charity donation
As in previous years, the winner of the Award has a donation of USD 10,000 made to the charity of their choice – and GAC Dubai chose to support the World Food Programme (WFP). The world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger, the WFP works to feed over 80 million people in more than 80 countries, both as short-term responses to emergencies and providing sustainable solutions to hunger in the long-term.

GAC Dubai’s winning entry was one of 33 from 23 companies around the GAC world, reflecting a wide range of practical measures taken in the spirit that the Award was established in 2015.

Björn Engblom, says such initiatives bear witness to the robust HSSE culture throughout the Group: “It does not always take a huge investment to improve our health, safety, security and environment. It takes willingness to make a change, smart application of resources and focused investment.”
