There was a time when central bankers were seen and not heard. All this has changed. Policy-makers now place an emphasis on transparency and plain English. In the US, former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke instituted forward guidance and introduced press conferences after every other monetary policy meeting. Uncoincidentally, Fed policy-makers began speaking their minds. The growing lack of consensus within central banks exacerbates the issue of communications from these critically important institutions.
