Commentary: French governor suggests wider ECB mandate

François Villeroy de Galhau, the Banque de France governor, has promoted a new European monetary approach by suggesting the European Central Bank should more directly widen its operating mandate beyond targeting purely price stability. In a deft speech opening a OMFIF-Banque de France symposium, he said the ECB’s strategic review would go considerably further than the refashioning of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary framework.
