RMT warns government travel confusion increases threat to Eurostar and Ferry Services

Mick Cash

TRANSPORT UNION RMT said today that the Government’s confused and contradictory messages over travel plans this summer increases the risk of financial collapse at the vital Eurostar rail links to the continent and piles pressure on Britain’s ferry services.

RMT launched a SAVE EUROSTAR campaign and petition this week – details below – and has warned that the chaotic messaging from ministers has only served to heighten the threat to the service.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;

“The conflicting and confused messaging from Ministers over summer travel plans could not have come at a worse time for Eurostar, which already hangs by a thread. Britain’s ferry services face parallel threats of an uncertain and insecure future as a result of the COVID pandemic.

“The mixed messaging reinforces RMT’s case for emergency financial bridging support to secure the future of Eurostar and the thousands of jobs the service supports. There can be no excuse for the Government to continue the stand off with the European partners and the need for a cooperative and strategic response is now urgent to save Eurostar.

“RMT has stepped up the SAVE EUROSTAR campaigning this week and we would urge everyone who values this green and sustainable link, and the economic role it will have to play in ‎breaking out of the current COVID crisis, to get on board with the campaign.”
