From the first day, session 4, the keynote presentation at the Malta Maritime Summit delivered by Gina Panayiotou, Founder & CEO of Oceans Arena “The Role of ESG in Shipping,” was a call to action for shipping industry stakeholders, to each access their unique scope of impact and use their voice to influence change.
Gina explained how ESG is not rocket science; It is what good shipowners already do and IMO regulations which have been around for decades regulate. What it offers is new duty of care and an opportunity for the industry to reset its’ narrative.
Strategies need to be simple, clear, aligned with business values and engaging of both internal and external stakeholders. At the core of every successful ESG strategy must to lie genuine intent, transparency, data accuracy and effective communications with key messaging delivered in the right way to the target audience.
Furthermore, Gina concluded with saying that with upcoming regulations which change the way in which companies report, moving away from plain compliance to presenting a holistic business value proposition, as well as shifting stakeholder expectations, getting ESG right is mission critical for a sustainable maritime sector.
